A majority of Americans are overweight; in fact the
United States is now the fattest country in the world, according to the
World Health Organization. The continued prosperity of the U.S.
is partially contingent upon our citizens becoming lean, as the health
implications with their associated costs are enormous!
Two major factors contribute to obesity:
(1) lack of exercise and (2) the
quality and closely-linked quantity of food intake. The
result of (1) not exercising is relatively straightforward, and
the benefits of engaging in quality physical activity are discussed
at the Exercise webpage.
Similarly, (2) our dietary decisions
lead to excess body fat directly and indirectly.
Direct
Cause of Excess Body FatFoods high in fat
are normally considered the culprit cause of excess body fat.
While fats, especially animal fats, are normally unhealthy, there
is an even larger villian. Highly glycemic (bad) carbohydrates causes
blood sugar levels to rise above normal, which results in increased
insulin levels. Weight gain, among other negative effects,
results. Highly glycemic foods also increase our appetite,
and may also cause an increase in fat by increasing triglycerides.
Indirect
Cause of Excess Body FatIn general, foods
that are devoid of life-giving nutrients cause our bodies to
cry out for necessary nutrients, which results in further hunger.
As we continue to eat to satisfy the craving, our weight increases
while our health decreases.

as a component of overall health is found at the Nutrition webpage. |
